I am Jinita. I make every Gist of Light candle by hand, in small batches, in Kelowna, British Columbia.
A candle is a small thing. It still changes a room. It marks the end of a working day, a quiet evening, or a table set for someone you care about. That is the part I care about—not the wax, but what the wax is for.
I have made things all my life. As a child, I liked to make a house feel like a home. I sketched, crafted, and moved things around a room until it felt right. That did not change when I grew up. It turned into candles.
I started Gist of Light in 2025, on my father’s 66th birthday. It was his gift and the first thing his daughter had built. He always said I would build something of my own.
So every candle is made for one of two reasons: to change how a room feels or to be given to someone. Small batches are how I keep that true. I check the scent, the wick, and the surface of every jar before it is packed. If one is not right, it does not go out.

What goes into a candle
Coconut soy wax in the glass jars. Pure soy in the 3.5 oz tins. No paraffin.
Cotton or wood wicks.
Phthalate-free and paraben-free fragrance oil. Nothing else.
I mould the wax flowers and fruit and set each one on the candle by hand. I pipe the whipped tops by hand. A candle should be worth looking at before you light it. Nothing on a candle is edible, however much it looks like it.
Three things make a candle burn well: let the first burn reach the edge of the jar, trim the wick to 6 mm each time, and stop after four hours. Do that and the candle burns evenly to the bottom.
