Description
Some candles remind you of a place. This one reminds you of a feeling — the warm, unhurried happiness of a summer afternoon, a bowl of strawberries on the counter, the smell of something sweet cooling on a rack nearby.
The Strawberry Shortcake is one of our most beloved dessert candles, and it earns that place every time someone opens the box and takes their first breath. The scent is true to life in a way that cheap candles never quite manage: no artificial sharpness, no candy-store sweetness that wears out its welcome. Just bright, ripe strawberries, warm vanilla sponge, and a finish of soft cream that settles into the room and stays there.
The scent, layer by layer
The opening note hits immediately: fresh strawberries, the kind that stain your fingers and smell like actual fruit rather than fruit flavouring. As the wax pools and the candle warms up, that brightness softens into something richer — buttery vanilla cake, the warm sweetness of something just pulled from the oven. The base note is the part that lingers longest: a soft, creamy vanilla that holds the whole scent together and makes the room feel genuinely comforting rather than just sweet.
It’s a gourmand fragrance done right. Bakery-warm, fruity, and layered enough to stay interesting for hours.
When to burn it
This is a weekend morning candle. A slow Saturday candle. Light it when you’re making actual waffles and want the whole kitchen to commit to the bit. Or light it on a Tuesday at 8 pm because you’re tired and your home should smell like joy.
It suits kitchens, living rooms, and anywhere you like to eat your breakfast in peace. It’s also one of the most commented-on candles we make when guests come over — people always ask what it is.
Why our candle makes a difference
Not all candles smell the way they’re supposed to. A lot of that comes down to wax. Most mass-market candles use paraffin — a petroleum byproduct that burns hot, fast, and doesn’t hold fragrance well. You get a strong cold throw (how it smells unlit) but a weak hot throw (how it actually fills the room when burning).
We use a premium coconut soy wax blend instead. Coconut wax burns cooler and slower than paraffin, which means two things: the fragrance oils release gradually and consistently, so the scent stays true and fills the room properly, and the candle lasts significantly longer. You’re not just buying a candle that smells good in the store — you’re buying one that keeps performing for 45 to 55 hours of burn time.
Coconut soy also burns cleaner. Less soot, no black marks on your walls or jar, no petroleum byproducts going into the air in your home. For a candle you’re burning while you eat, that matters.
The fragrance oil: phthalate-free and carefully chosen
We use premium fragrance oils rather than essential oils for our dessert range — and that’s an honest choice, not a shortcut. Strawberry shortcake cannot be replicated with essential oils alone. What we can control is the quality of the fragrance oil we use, and we exclusively source phthalate-free oils that meet strict safety standards. No harsh chemicals, no toxins, no compromises on what you’re breathing in.
Made in Kelowna, BC — by hand, in small batches
Every Gist of Light candle is hand-poured in small batches in Kelowna, British Columbia. We’re in the Okanagan Valley — surrounded by fruit orchards, lake summers, and some of the most sensory landscapes in Canada — and that sense of place shapes everything we make.
Small-batch production means every candle gets individual attention. We’re not running a production line. We’re pouring each candle by hand, checking the scent, checking the set, and making sure what leaves the studio is something we’d genuinely want burning in our own homes.
Who it’s made for
Buy it for yourself when you want your home to smell like comfort. Buy it as a birthday gift for the person who has everything but always appreciates something thoughtful and beautiful. Buy it as a housewarming gift, a hostess gift, a thank-you, a just-because.
It arrives in our signature packaging, ready to give — no additional wrapping required.
It’s a particularly good gift for: strawberry lovers, dessert obsessives, anyone who lights candles as part of a home ritual, foodies, and anyone who loves cute candles that are as good as they look.

Candle care — how to get the most from every burn
Your first burn is the most important. Allow the candle to burn until the melted wax reaches the full edge of the jar — this usually takes 2–3 hours for an 8 oz candle. Soy and coconut wax have a “burn memory”: if you extinguish it too early on the first burn, the wax will tunnel down the middle and never burn to the edges again, wasting up to a third of the candle.
Before every subsequent burn, trim the wick to ¼ inch. A trimmed wick burns cleaner, produces less soot, and keeps the flame at the right height for even fragrance release.
Never burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Let the wax cool and set fully before relighting. Keep away from drafts, which cause uneven burning. Discontinue use when ¼ inch of wax remains in the jar.
The jar is reusable — rinse with warm, soapy water once the candle is spent.
